Vehicle Self-Assessment
After deciding that you are going to return your leased Kia, the next step is a quick Self-Assessment of the condition of the vehicle. This allows you to identify if there is any excess wear or damage and if so, estimate the potential charge that you would be responsible for when turning in the vehicle. You will receive a copy of Kia’s Wear and Estimation Tool a few months before the lease is set to expire or you can also access it at any time on their financial website. For most vehicles, acceptable wear and tear includes scratches, dings, or dents that are less than 4 inches, windshield cracks that are less than 2 inches, window or paint chips that are less than ½ inch, and tread that is equal to or more than ⅛ inch from the lowest point. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to complete the self-assessment and then you can get a cost estimate if needed by inputting the specific details of your vehicle online. You can then decide if you want to schedule an appointment to get the repairs fixed or pay the fee at lease end.
Schedule Return Appointment
About 1-2 months before the final lease payment is due, you’ll want to contact our dealership to schedule the lease return appointment. If you leased your Sportate, Telluride, or Sorento from us, you’ll receive a reminder notification. Since we are an authorized Kia dealer, you can return the vehicle to us even if you started the lease at a different dealership. Simply give us a call or fill out our Contact Us form to let us know and we’ll talk about the next steps. In the event that you need to turn in the vehicle before the lease is up, you’ll want to check your contract for fee information – early lease termination can be expensive but we’ll do all that we can do to help you find the best solution.
Clean Your Vehicle and Collect Necessary Items
A few days before your scheduled turn-in appointment here at McGrath Kia of Highland Park, make sure to clean out your vehicle. This should include removing any personal items and ensuring that the interior is free from dirt or crumbs. You can leave the Owner’s Manual in the glovebox or set it aside with the other items you’ll need to present with the vehicle, such as the keys, cargo cover, and service documents. The exterior of the vehicle should also be washed if there is noticeable salt or dirt. Finally, submit the Odometer Statement online. Once you are here, you’ll have the option to lease a new Kia and take advantage of our current incentives, purchase a used vehicle, or walk away without a replacement vehicle.
